So we had a weekend at Ocean Beach on Fire Island. It doubtless would have been better if the sun shined, if we didn't get totally soaked while trying to make our way to the Sunken Forest (we turned around), or if our hotel (Cleggs) hadn't been right across from CJ's, which has the distinction of being the island's loudest bar. And it's not the music being played that's particularly loud, it's the music being sung at the top of many drunken lungs that's loud, especially at 3 in the morning. But I speak like an old salty Brooklyn curmudgeon, which I am hopefully not. Here are a couple of endearing shots.
The question on everybody's mind, drunk or not: How did the deer get on the island?
The diversity of housing styles and decorations was one of my favorite features of the island.
Ah a bit of humor from one of the islanders.

We've got a super quick San Francisco trip planned this weekend, and we want to hit up a taqueria in the Mission. Last time we wrapped our hands around burritos at Pancho Villa (for our complete last trip itinerary ...). We'd love to hear people's favorite spots for West Coast Mexican (cheap, preferably). Or anything else you think we shouldn't miss. We're definitely going back to Tartine. Displaced West Coasters, speak out!

There are many nice things about the Gulf beaches of Florida: white sand, warm water, fresh seafood, to name a few. However, one of my favorites is Dippin' Dots. According to Dippin' Dots website, you can get the little tiny balls of ice cream locally at, uh, the venerable locations that include Madame Tussauds, Madison Square Garden, and Circle Line Cruises, but to me Dippin' Dots and Florida will always be one in the same. It's an overpriced concession that I first enjoyed many years ago while working on my sun-glow, and despite its chain status and rather hefty price, I rush to it every year like a moth to the flame. How do they make those balls so small?
