Albert Hofmann, inventor of LSD, passed a few days ago at the age of 102. This intrepid explorer of psychedelic compounds is directly responsible for much personal mental exploration of a few generations. A while back, before Hofmann's passing, one of the ABL:Radio DJs titled one of his mixes as an homage.

We've been so busy promoting our DJ night, Suspiria, we haven't had much time to make mixes for the podcast. Thankfully Carrie sent me this one our way other day. I've been listening to it ever since.

As always, Carrie has pulled together a nice menagerie of tunes. My favorite is the Midnight Juggernauts track "Into the Galaxy" right at the end. Nice touch!

Back in the 90's when I helped to throw a few parties here and there, we always picked someone to be the PPH (Peak Party Hours) DJ. This person had the distinction of having the highest energy level.

On March 28th, ABL:Radio DJs are starting a new local night at club Deity on Atlantic Ave. I'm hoping Ladycréme will be the PPH DJ since they always want to make me get up and throw my hands in the air like I've won the lotto.

This latest mix is more on the disco tip than you usually expect from these guys, but I guarantee it's every bit as good if not better as some of their others. It was originally set-up as a DJ exchange with our comrades over in Bologna, Italy (DJ Omnidrive and associates), and we should be getting a mix from them soon.

Not content with sitting on the sidelines after 88 episodes, I've finally decided to produce my own mix for ABL:Radio. I'm following in the footsteps of many great DJs who've graced our blog, hopefully this comes close to the magnificence they've brought us.

This mix should take you on a dreamy 80-minute interplanetary journey though disco, techno, and other far-out jams. I've thrown in a one of my favorite records from a previous DJ life near the end of the mix. Enjoy and happy Valentine's Day!

Tal, making his second appearance on this podcast, has returned with another fabulously eccentric mélange of classic techno beats, IDM, and other treats. This one will be sure to hold your interests throughout.

While this may only be his second podcast mix, he had been DJing monthly with the rest of the ABL gang over at our now defunct Skylab party. Don't worry though, if you're itching to hear him out somewhere, we're working on another venue closer to Carroll Gardens / Park Slope area.

While the podcast has been on an extended vacation, the DJs have been hard at work. We two hard rockin', disco rompin' Ladycreme mixes for your enjoyment this week. The second one will follow later in another post, plus I have a few more in the works.

This Saturday will be the last Skylab event at Sputnik Bar. Ladycreme will be DJing alongside Dekker. It's sad to see the event end a year of ups and downs, but we had a great time. I'm currently looking for a bar in the Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Park Slope area which might be interested in hosting a DJ night.

On a somewhat related note, Cut Copy hails from Melbourne, AU where one of our ABL:Radio Djs, Spankie Hazard, originates. You might remember his tribute to Brooklyn's own Environ Records we posted a while back. Spankie will be appearing this Friday on "A Downtown Affair," (10:30pm 89.1FM/wnyu.org), a radio show hosted by Mike McGill (works at Environ) another ABL DJ. Be sure to check it out! If you miss the show, the mix should be posted over at Mike's blog, "Let's Get Serious" at some point next week.

For this week's podcast we're bringing you some talent straight out of Carroll Gardens. We met Eric Shans of Phenotract at a party thrown by Rich Woods over in Clinton Hill and we've been bumping into him around the 'hood ever since. He and his roommate are frequent Wednesday DJs over at Abilene. Eric described his project to us a while back and it sounded intriguing, so we thought we'd give their sophomore album "Transient Messages" a listen. You'll find it as throw back to mysterious synth driven pop of the mid to late 80's (Somewhere between Erasure, New Order , and early Front Line Assembly maybe?). Bio:

Brooklyn, NY based electronic act Phenotract was started in 1999 with electronic sounds, textures, and rhythms to create synthetic workouts geared for both the dancefloor and the mind. Since it's inception, he has drawn influences from both older and newer house,electronica, trance, and industrial to create a lasting impressions on the listener.

After a series of demos, the first album release was "Within A Second" in 2003. It combined hard tech dance floor tracks, periods of chilled out moments, and an overall atmospheric haze that permeated throughout. It was described as a dreamy otherwordly album that digitally cataloged the human condition. Isaac Glendening of the Philadelphia trance-pop act Cesium 137 helped produce a fair portion of it.

As the project's sound grew and time passed, the tracks morphed into more formidable structures, which have become more melody laden and now carry an even more distinct sound and groove. Now released in October of 2007 ,"Transient Messages" brought aboard the Brooklyn based female vocalist Niabi Caldwell who adds an angelic, ethereal quality to the mix. Boasting futuristic synths, deeply effected voices, driving beats, and an imaginary soundtrack like quality, the new sound is descibed as "neo-pop". Phenotract will continue to attempt to keep evolving it's sonic aesthetic

No one can deny that Jon G is a peak party hour DJ. If you were the energy dial, it would be somewhere around 11. This week's mix is certainly along those lines. You'll hear some favorites like M.I.A. among others. My own front-runner would have to be "So Fucking Disco" by Pase Rock. Enjoy!

Yes folks, we're back! We know you missed us.

Jumping back in with a thunderous start, we have Brooklyn-based Devin Dirt, founder of Black Van records. Devin and his cohorts have been throwing some outstanding underground parties around our borough for the last few years under the name Machine Punk.

This performance might be a little harder than our usual fare, but I attest you won't be disappointed by Devin's completely original performances. If you're interested in hearing him live, you should go check out the Black Van party over at Monkey Town this Saturday in Williamsburg. Devin will be performing with one of our longtime friends, Oliver Dodd.

The longer you live in this city, the more things occupy your time. Lately, work had been a major hit my focus, ABL:Radio has taken a back seat (the 3rd or 4th row maybe). Early-on, I was dead-set on making deadlines and meeting them. I could be a real stubborn ass at times, driving people to meet targets I set. Over time I've found it to be counter-productive to rush creative spark, I've since relaxed.

This week, I almost dropped the ball entirely and didn't release a mix. On Friday, I hit up our usual league of Brooklyn DJs, but came up dry. Seems I'm not the only one with a full schedule these days.

Thinking back, I remembered our fellow DJ and podcaster in Bologna, Italy, Dj Omnidrive. You might remember his mix, "Why Can't I Be Italian??" A title very appropriate for our bewitching borough crammed with Italian influences.

This week, I'm grabbing one of Omnidrive's mixes he assembled back in March. This one seems most appropriate for all its dirty and alluring electro sounds you might hear at clubs around the city.

You should read Omnidrive's impressive bio back on his first mix, it has a similar spirit as many of the people that drew me into electronic music scene I met early on (early 90's). Times have changes and music evolved, people have cultivated their talents and tastes well. It's encouraging to see people elsewhere have similar ambitions and moved in mutual directions.

Apologies for the lack of posting the podcast last week, I had a significant crisis to deal with (at work), which had me distracted. So, to make up for it, we're posting a 2 part live session from our weekly Skylab party.

At this point, if you follow the ABL:Radio podcast, you should be well familiar with Rich Woods and his characteristic style of Techno. This live mix is a perfect example of what you might anticipate hearing when seeing him out at Pasha or Sputnik.

So, this week we have a new DJ on the ABL:Radio roster, Cosmo. Brooklyn resident Cosmo has been kickin' it in electronic dance music and indie rock scenes since the early 90's. He started out DJing around clubs in Miami and later became a member of the rock band Muse (Lava/Atlantic records). He toured US and Canada with Collective Soul, Luscious Jackson, Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr, Live, Silverchair, Beck, and 311. In 1999, COSMO left Muse to join Astralwerks recording artists, Metrodub (Miami, Florida).

Getting back to his Miami DJ roots, he toured with Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, and Fat Boy Slim, plus he was a resident at Liquid, Bar Room, Chili Pepper, and Level. He produced a handful of  dance records, some were released internationally, on various labels (Universal, Filtered, Neo Records) from 1998 on.

From this point in his career, Cosmo was able to work on his skills as a music producer and engineer. He was a producer for various indie rock bands and worked with Barry Gibb (Bee Gees) on several projects including the 2005 Barbara Streisand album.

Recently Cosmo moved to Brooklyn with his newly formed glam/electro group, The Junkies. Their album "Anthem Style Punk Kids" comes out on June 26th, after which they will be touring worldwide. Cosmo produces all the songs for the band.

Adding to ABL:Radio's seasonal mix series, Pittsburgh native Thomas Cox brings us a collection of laid back jams new and old, perfect for an afternoon of sunning in the park. Summer Dance Party is a perfect meld of Detroit and disco, placing Motor City staples Carl Craig, Amp Fiddler, Recloose, Omar-S and Underground Resistance superband Galaxy 2 Galaxy amongst classic dance sounds from Nick Straker Band, Plastic Mode, G.Q. and Escort.

ABL:radio regular Unjust is back this week with a hard-rocking mix of jacking house and timeless techno from the Windy City to the Big Smoke. Composed of classics acquired during her crate-digging sessions at Records Wanted on Essex and in her native Florida, Just Undo It is inspired by Unjust's opening sets at the Bunker, and evokes a distant summer when the city streets gleefully ran with the blood of a thousand boombox-shattered eardrums.

This week's ace selection of robophilic italo, disco and Chicago house comes to us from native Scot and current London resident Meschi. He belongs to the hit list of DJs (myself included) whose exploration into robot disco began with I-F’s venerable Mixed Up in the Hague. Meschi credits the community of the Cybernetic Broadcasting System with continuing to inspire his musical repertoire, and this mix is a testament to this influence.

Back in 1981, long before the iPod and when I was a young lad, my mother purchased a Sony Walkman. I'd steal it from her when I'd go off to bed and sit for hours listening to my limited collection of cassette tapes. One of my favorites was the soundtrack to "Blade Runner," a movie which had lasting impact in my dreams and visions of what the future might bring. (Yes, I know "Blade Runner" was about a dystopian L.A. of the future.)

This week, imunderpressure returns with his second mix for ABL:Radio. It begins with a track from the "Blade Runner" soundtrack (Esper Edition) and swiftly moves into a pleasing set of Italo, disco, and 80's funk 'n soul. You'll recognize some tracks from previous mixes, but there are plenty you haven't heard here, too.  This mix is exactly the headphone candy I would've loved on that old Sony, whether slipping off into dream land or rambling around the streets.
