After a brief hiatus, the ABL:Radio crew is back to our regular DJ shenanigans. We're taking over the basement at a swanky new club on Atlantic Ave (between Hoyt and Bond) called Deity. The party will run on a bi-weekly basis if all goes as planned.
The DJ line-up for the first night will consist of Bethany Benzur, Ladycreme, and Carrie Whitenoise.

Cobble Hill resident, Bethany of ABL:Radio and Cybernetic-Broadcasting System fame, will be joining our friends Attitude City in Montréal this Friday for a DJ extravaganza. If you happen to be anywhere near, do not miss this event!
Happy Thanksgiving!!! That said -- What are you up to on Friday?
Consider this: we're throwing a party at Le Cagibi (formerly Esperanza) and wanted to know if you were free. Music courtesy of ABL Radio and Cybernetic Broadcasting System's BETHANY BENZUR (NYC, USA), who in our opinion is as good as it gets for electronic disco. This one has been three years in the making, and we've even booked extra sound to fill the joint out.
Minneapolis DJ of the Year JEFF DUBOIS (MN, USA) gets things started in style with his signature brew of italo, boogie, and down-to-earth dance music. Only 5 bucks to party all night long.
While you're there, check out our merch table: we've got Loose Joints t-shirts, mix CDs, and other handcrafted delights at ridiculously low prices.
Loose Joints presents:
Bethany Benzur (ATL/NYC, USA)
Jeff Dubois (MPLS, USA)
David Shaw (MTL)
Friday, November 23rd
Le Cagibi, 5490 St. Laurent (corner Saint-Viateur)
$5 10-3am

It feels like eons since Bethany last graced us with a mix. Since that time, she has steadily fed her vinyl addiction with more tantalizing Italo, euro-electro and dark disco records. This mix could've been a perfect soundtrack for that favorite classic anime, "Galaxy Express 999," a movie chock full of interesting androids, cyborgs and robots.
Regular ABL:Radio listeners will notice "Permanent Wave" by Brooklyn's own Ladycréme around the beginning of the last half. Enjoy!
Update: Bethany pointed out that "A Cambria Heights Affair" is by another Brooklynite, Nick Chacona. I wonder if the track name is a hat-tip to 70's Brooklyn disco/funk group Crown Heights Affair.

It feels like ages since Bethany last did a new mix for ABL. Her last effort was "Mutually Assured Destruction," which we posted back in October. Since then, she took off to Rotterdam, Netherlands, where she picked up some killer records--which you'll find on this mix--and DJed alongside other serious heads at the Robots for Robots party hosted by CBS.
On this mix you will hear recent tracks from likes of Kenny Larkin, Legowelt, Orgue Electronique, and Disco Devil. You will also hear classic sounds from the likes of Munich Machine weaving a tapestry of sound that is dark, mysterious, and a little sinful.
Bethany will be visiting Brooklyn on the weekend of February 10-11th for Crafty's birthday, Jon G's wedding anniversary, and to see Adam's bundle 'o joy. If you're interested in hearing her spin, contact us or leave a comment -- we might arrange something if there's enough interest.
Update: Some of you may have experienced problems while downloading. The problem has been corrected.

The synths are charged, all systems go! The 'lectric Disco Robots are ready to attack! Let the invasion begin!
After a brief hiatus, Bethany has returned to ABL:Radio with a new vigor. During her time away, she did a mix for Attitude City, secured more devastating vinyl classics, and started planning her next blitz to liberate your stereo system. On her intrepid campaign she encountered casualities, her headphones exploded toward the end of a take. Gabe, her ever resourceful and creative husband, quickly came to aid with Krazy Glue™, temporarily resuscitating the headphones long enough for her to triumph on this crucial mission.
We're happy that the this mix was a success and that no humans or animals were actually hurt in the process. Plus, you get to hear multiple Lime songs with 2 versions Angel Eyes mixed, Freeze's I.O.U. , some DMX Krew and a sweet NYC disco track I haven't quite put my finger on yet. It's now ok for you to leave the bomb shelter, get some sunshine, and enjoy this mix!

Before heading off to Texas this weekend, we wanted to leave you with a little gift. Bethany recorded this mix for Attitude City a few weeks back for our Labor Day DJ exchange. It's a solid gold mix that's oh-so Bethany. This one is a little shorter than her usual mixes for ABL radio, but it's definitely not lacking. Please enjoy, and while you're at it, if you missed Attitude City's "Shake Your Rhombus", go check it out!
Also, if you are a regular Cybernetic Broadcasting System listener, you may have heard Bethany's mixes from ABL. You will also find her on this mixage page among the other CBS greats!

You never quite know what to expect from Bethany. She keeps her artistic agendas hidden during the entire mix process, then releases a finished product that is always a delight and surprise upon which to feast your ears. This episode takes a deeper and darker path than her last few; while it includes the disco and Italo classics you've come to expect, you'll also encounter the likes of Legowelt and Carl Craig.
While I usually assist the DJs in designing album art, Bethany's husband Gabe is responsible of all of hers. When she emailed me the art for this weeks episode, I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Gabe always does an excellent job capturing the essence of the mix while adding a little of his warped sense of humor in the process. If you would like to see more of Gabe's work, his design firm recently won a prize for the book he helped write, design and illustrate. The book is being shown at the 2006 One Show Winners Exhibition from July 11th until September 8th at the One Club Gallery.

Everyone is on vacation this week, including the DJs. For this weeks episode, we went back into the archives and found this little gem by Bethany. She recorded it last October, before we started the podcast.
On this mix, Bethany takes us on another excellent excursion through a series of timeless disco and italo tracks. She selected the name "Love Magic" from track 13 by John Davis & The Monster Orchestra, a highly underrated disco producer who virtually disappeared, then popped-up in 1992 to record the theme song for "Beverly Hills, 90210".
Enjoy this weeks mix, and we shall return to our regular schedule on Friday, July 14th with a new mix from Adam Smith.

Regular listeners already know the a-b-c's of Bethany's style and won't be surprised to hear this week's mix pumping some Italo-Disco greats. For this incarnation, she's included one that's a personal favorite around the ABL home, "Fix it Man" (which is also a nice reminder that Pride is just around the corner, and a good time to thank the gay-friendly clubs of the 70s and 80s in New York and Chicago for helping to make all this great music possible--thanks!).
In light of the beautious weekend ahead, may we suggest grabbing an Aranciata and Campari cocktail and heading outside to live La Dolce Vida.

Put on those platforms you've been saving for a special occasion and reapply your glitter lip gloss. DJ Bethany Benzur, who also runs ATLectro, has unearthed some disco and italo goodies that'll help you dance your way to a fabulous Friday even if the gloomy weather says otherwise. If you're a fan of Bethany's mixes, you'll enjoy what I'd like to call that "classic Bethany sound."
A horoscope for all those Taurus birthdays:
Change is on the horizon. After a week of your lover's passive-aggressive moaning, you're starting to see things in a different light. Does that mean the relationship is fixed? No, but it does mean that you're going to have a lot of fun tonight. As for all those work worries, like how will you get through the day after having been out until 4 a.m., may we suggest a little stereophonic pick-me-up.

We here at ABrooklynLife would like to remind you that you can stay up all night dancing to some fabulous disco-tinged beats, but you cannot--under any circumstances--have your cake and eat it too*! Thanks to the fabulous DJ Bethany Benzur of ATLectro from Atlanta for pulling this intelligent mix together and somewhat easing our Friday morning hangover.
For subscribers only, we released a bonus mix from Bethany last Monday. It is only available on the feed.

Time for your Friday music snack. Up this week is DJ Bethany Benzur who runs ATLectro and has been DJing around Atlanta for years. She started as a deep house DJ (I fondly remember one of her first shows at the now-closed Nomenclature) and has morphed over the years into one of Atlanta's most enthusiastic purveyors of electro, Italo and disco. She's housed many a techno DJ (one with particularly questionable personal hygiene skills) in her quest to enlighten her fair southern city. A talented DJ, Bethany can always get people dancing--and so, without further ado ...
