Adam has been busy doing his Dad duties so we haven't been blessed with a mix from him in a while. Out of the blue he dropped this nice little techy house mix on us. Guess he can't be kept from his DJ passions for too long. We have all our bases cover here with everything from LFO, Villalobos, Janet Jackson to Swayzak to name a few. Have a great holiday, we're off to London for the weekend so we won't be posting much. Cheers!

Update|| A special note from Adam:
Dear Friends of Skylab,
I am sad to say that this Saturday will be the penultimate Skylab event. The final Skylab party will fall on June 30th. I will be DJing this Saturday, June 23rd, with my friend Ivee (Unjust) and we will be rockin it all night long. So come early, stay late, have some cocktails, fall down, get back up, jack your body, sit at the bar, put your hands in the air like you just don't care, shake what yer mama gave ya, have a shot of patron, tell me to play some classic rock (not tonight honey, sorry), dance, stand, whatever...I mean what else are you gonna do, go hear Carl Craig for the 10th time? It's not like Lazy Fat People is playing at the same party. He is? Oh. Performing Live? Hmm. Well it's not like it's at Studio B. It is at Studio B? I see. But they have that really long coat check line when you leave. Oh it's 80 degrees outside? Shit. OK, forget that, come rock out with yer, umm, friends, at Sputnik. We miss you. How about if we play a Carl Craig record? How about the one where he remixes Lazy Fat People? Jesus.
Love Adam.

Long time ago, there existed a place where people lived care-free -- the only laws governing the land were four-four beats and mandatory dancing until sun rise. On our episode this week, Adam Smith celebrates this magical land with a tour of classic house and acid from 1986 to 1993. A few weeks back, two crates of old house records fell into his hands when a well known DJ has to hightail it out of New York. It took a while for Adam to prune the crap and unearth this pile of gems. We hope you enjoy the results!

Adam has now completed a total of 10 mixes for our podcast. While he has been a solid DJ the entire time I've known him, his recorded efforts have steadily improved on many levels. The episode we present today is my favorite so far, and, in my opinion, his best.
We start off the set with a steady progression of house and dark-disco infused beats leading into drums, a little '80s electro-funk, and a trip into acid land. On the way out, Adam treats us to some Carl Craig, a little Big Boi--a throwback to his Atlanta roots--and finishes the whole thing off with The Clash.
This could be the last mix we see from Adam for a while, as he is about to become a first-time father. If you enjoyed his mix, drop him a shout-out in the comment section. Enjoy!

What could be full of more spook and superstition than a Friday the 13th in October? Maybe this dark and lovely mix by our own Adam Smith!
Over his last few episodes, Adam has really been cranking a trove of auriferous DJ sets (here and here ). This mix is no exception. We have new stuff, remixes of industrial classics, dark analog synths, experimental Detroit electro, a little Magda and the eerie sounds of Prins Thomas and Lindstrøm. Trust us, you will not be disappointed with this installment of ABL:Radio. So, what better way to overcome your paraskavedekatriaphobia and exorcising all those demons with this musical brew?
While scanning Wikipedia I uncovered this dreary "fact" concerning the origins of Friday 13th superstitions:
There have been a number of events known as "Black Fridays" in history. Usually, these events are devastating. Some historians propose that the origin of the "Black Friday" was the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of Knights Templars on October 13, 1307 (Friday), to be later tortured into admitting heresy.
Yikes! That's enough to scare the be-jeebus outta ya... Anyway... umm, enjoy the mix!

Adam takes us on another expedition though a deep and transcendental blend of techno. Just because it's the end of summer doesn't mean he's been slacking. To the contrary, his mixes just keep getting tighter. If I were a Sufi poet listening to this mix I might meditate for a while and say something like, "This mix embodies the mystic feelings of the last days of summer and is like the time in life when pleasures last forever and death is to be defied, the zenith when the slide into autumn is unamaginable."

Normally we plug Brooklyn events, but this Friday one of our very own DJ Adam Smith and our good friend Kendra are playing the Bunker party at Subtonic. Also on the bill for the night of "ecstatic disgo" and "experimental boom boom" are Ivy (Unjust) and Michael Louis of Miami's Future Collective. Cover is a measly $5 and the party runs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. See ya there!

Adam eschews traditional DJ techniques, dumping the old SL1200s and his trusty mixer for Ableton on a Powerbook. You would think the results would take far less effort to produce. On the contrary, I've never seen Adam work so hard on a mix. Yes folks, out of the ABL:Radio DJ sweatshop comes another excellent mix.
Through layering and looping, Adam remixes each individual track and makes tham all his own. You will hear techno influences tieing David Bowie with Information Society. There are oodles of analog synths and wiffs of acid to keep you well absorbed. As with all of Adam's work, he takes you on a venture from the upbeat to deep and back again. Enjoy!

Adam returns this week with inspiration from Whitenoise's "Laid Back Up Tight." This is one of Adam's most eclectic mixes to date on ABL:Radio. The journey starts with David Bowie's "Space Oddity," moves into ambient and Aphex Twin, takes a few detours into 80's classics, settles into solid techno for a spell, and then ends deep and introspective. If you're looking for something homogeneous like his previous SVEK mixes, you won't find it here. Adam has relaxed a bit dug deep into his record bins for this one. Enjoy!

So, I'm in Atlanta listening to the radio (something I never do in New York) and I hear this song playing on the radio: "I'ma get, get, get, get you drunk/ get you love drunk off my hump/ My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my lovely little lumps." Which of course, makes me laugh out loud. Who the HELL would listen to this song? I mean it's funny, it makes me giggle, but puleeez. And then I discover it's by the Black Eyed Peas and everybody and their mother knows this song. How I have missed it, I don't know. But I can't say I'm sad. These are the things you learn with a car and a radio.
In honor of the love-drunk-hump day, I remind you that ABL DJ Adam Smith will be rockin' out at Abilene Wednesday night from 9ish onward. And if he plays the Black Eyed Peas song, free drinks for everyone at the bar!

Yep, it's that time of the week again. Time for another installation of ABrooklynLife's podcast. In today's edition, Brooklyn's Adam Smith takes us back to Detroit for some soul-infused house. Who knows in what form DEMF will emerge this year, but it's nice to pay some respect to the city that's contributed so much to music and the dance music scene. (If you want to commodify your love for Motor City, there's always a T-shirt.) If you ever have any questions about the records played here, you might consider Discogs.
