Christmas

Every year there are news stories about whether the political correctness of "Happy Holidays" has gone to far, but the North Fork Bank on Court Street in Carroll Gardens has a unique approach to this debate. It appears Jesus is missing from the bank's plastic creche display. Either they are taking Christmas literally and Jesus will appear in their window display early on the morning of Dec. 25--or something's afoot.

Happy 5766. I think I may have attended the prototypical non-orthodox New Yorkish Jewish New Year dinner. I supped with a Southerner, a Russian-Jewish-Canadian-American, a Polish-German-American, a German, a Californian and me (a Michigan-Ohio-Pennsylvania-Atlanta-Brooklynite). I learned that mostly sweet dishes are to be served on the day, and that's just fine with me. We feasted on apples dipped in honey, honey-almond chicken, roasted potatoes, carrots and pineapple, green beens (everyone needs a little something green),  honey cake and apple cake.  Plus lots of great wine.
