Podcast: April 2007 Archives
Yes folks, it's that time again. This week at Skylab we have Dekker and Tal, a former East Village Radio show host of "Electrobeef," mixing up a storm. Sputnik Bar is conveniently located one block from the Classon Ave G Station, a mere 10min train ride from Williamsburg or Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens/Park Slope.

It feels like eons since Bethany last graced us with a mix. Since that time, she has steadily fed her vinyl addiction with more tantalizing Italo, euro-electro and dark disco records. This mix could've been a perfect soundtrack for that favorite classic anime, "Galaxy Express 999," a movie chock full of interesting androids, cyborgs and robots.
Regular ABL:Radio listeners will notice "Permanent Wave" by Brooklyn's own Ladycréme around the beginning of the last half. Enjoy!
Update: Bethany pointed out that "A Cambria Heights Affair" is by another Brooklynite, Nick Chacona. I wonder if the track name is a hat-tip to 70's Brooklyn disco/funk group Crown Heights Affair.

Long time ago, there existed a place where people lived care-free -- the only laws governing the land were four-four beats and mandatory dancing until sun rise. On our episode this week, Adam Smith celebrates this magical land with a tour of classic house and acid from 1986 to 1993. A few weeks back, two crates of old house records fell into his hands when a well known DJ has to hightail it out of New York. It took a while for Adam to prune the crap and unearth this pile of gems. We hope you enjoy the results!

ABL:Radio is on a hiatus this week, but we will return with a new mix from Adam Smith (aka DJ Dad). In the meantime, for your listening pleasure, we bring you a mix from the djsarepersons podcast based in Argentina. The silky smooth sounds should put you in the right mood for spring. It is spring, right?

Apologies for the delay posting this week. This episode was available on the RSS feed much earlier (go subscribe!)
Our special guest this week is Marquee69, a Brooklyn resident. As you know by now, we like to change it up once in a while, this episode is one of those cases. The styles on this mix are multifaceted and synergetic, in essence, it works well. A fan of WARP Records artists would welcome what we have for you this week.
For a better description we can refer to Marquee's own promo copy:
Favoring unexpected guitar riffs and bass lines, his creativity is a welcomed change from the current musical environment. Combining the best of Trip Hop, Acid Punk, Drum & Bass and Reggae, attempting to compare him to any artist is difficult if not impossible. From the streets of London, Miami, and New York, Marquee69’s music is as rich and diverse as the cultures he’s experienced. Hearing him jump from a distorted piano to a rich bass to a soft jazz high-hat is a melodic rollercoaster; you’re constantly twisted in unanticipated directions. Gritty, melodious, raw, and refined Marquee69’s music is a series of contradictions brilliantly blended into a style that is all his own; BANGING! Raw, rebellious energy of Punk, bouncy and infectious beats of Dancehall Reggae, ultra modern sounds of Hip Hop and Garage, with a bit of something you’ve never heard before. It comes together all its own.
