Podcast: October 2006 Archives

Coherent_resonance2 Over the next few weeks we will be bringing you a series of first-rate DJs and producers new to ABL:Radio. Starting off the chain we have Dekker (Adam Hurwitz), a visual artist by day and mix-master / tunesmith by night. Dekker cut his DJ teeth on the NYC Drum 'n Bass scene in the mid-'90s. His experiences led him to tinker with Logic and Reason on a Mac, producing his own music--you can hear a sample of his stuff in today's mix.

Dekker has assembled a delectable set of dub, dubby-house, and techno including favorites like Shit Robot’s remix of Dondolo’s “Dragon,” a track I’ve been searching for since hearing it on Beats in Space a while back. If you're a fan of Unjust and Adam Smith’s techno mixes, you will definitely enjoy Dekker. And if his mix has you fiending for dubby house, you should also go check out Graham’s mix.

277532499_8086748ee6_o_1 After hearing this mix, you will be clamoring to hear Dekker live. Today is your lucky day, my friend, as he does a monthly party bringing together other visual artists also interested in DJing and music production. Spinart series came about a few years back when Dekker went to an art exhibition of works by Alex Ross and Steve DiBenedetto, who were also DJing the event. Their mutual epiphany spawned Spinart as a showcase for musically savvy New Yorkers to link their music interests with their art. The next Spinart event is on November 2nd at Loreley Lounge in the Lower East Side.

Cbstransmittorsmall Cybernetic Broadcasting System will be broadcasting Bethany's "Mutually Assured Destruction" mix at 2PM today. If you would like to tune-in, go to cybernetic-broadcasting.net or cbs.nu. May the 'lectric Disco Robots prevail!

M_a_d_high The synths are charged, all systems go! The 'lectric Disco Robots are ready to attack! Let the invasion begin!

After a brief hiatus, Bethany has returned to ABL:Radio with a new vigor. During her time away, she did a mix for Attitude City, secured more devastating vinyl classics, and started planning her next blitz to liberate your stereo system. On her intrepid campaign she encountered casualities, her headphones exploded toward the end of a take. Gabe, her ever resourceful and creative husband, quickly came to aid with Krazy Glue™, temporarily resuscitating the headphones long enough for her to triumph on this crucial mission.

We're happy that the this mix was a success and that no humans or animals were actually hurt in the process. Plus, you get to hear multiple Lime songs with 2 versions Angel Eyes mixed, Freeze's I.O.U. , some DMX Krew and a sweet NYC disco track I haven't quite put my finger on yet. It's now ok for you to leave the bomb shelter, get some sunshine, and enjoy this mix!

Superstitious2 What could be full of more spook and superstition than a Friday the 13th in October? Maybe this dark and lovely mix by our own Adam Smith!

Over his last few episodes, Adam has really been cranking a trove of auriferous DJ sets (here and here ). This mix is no exception. We have new stuff, remixes of industrial classics, dark analog synths, experimental Detroit electro, a little Magda and the eerie sounds of Prins Thomas and Lindstrøm. Trust us, you will not be disappointed with this installment of ABL:Radio. So, what better way to overcome your paraskavedekatriaphobia and exorcising all those demons with this musical brew?

While scanning Wikipedia I uncovered this dreary "fact" concerning the origins of Friday 13th superstitions:

There have been a number of events known as "Black Fridays" in history. Usually, these events are devastating. Some historians propose that the origin of the "Black Friday" was the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of Knights Templars on October 13, 1307 (Friday), to be later tortured into admitting heresy.

Yikes! That's enough to scare the be-jeebus outta ya... Anyway... umm, enjoy the mix!

Dogpony2_titledFirst off, a major apology for not posting the mix this morning. My Ubuntu box died (hardware problem) and I wasn't able to work on the podcast until I got to work.

The Dog and Pony Show is a new project from the dj who brought you East Village Radio's infamous Electro Beef. This mix is the first episode of the show which, although it has a new name, still keeps the wild style of his previous mixes, dropping whatever fits the moment from Wagon Christ to Throbbing Gristle. Since we don't know when to expect the next episode from Dog and Pony (maybe after his Tel-Aviv tour?) this is a real treat. Drop him a comment here or check out the archives on electrobeef.com to make sure the Dog and Pony Show comes through again.

I'd like to give Unjust special recognition for introducing us to Tal (Electro Beef), creating the cover art, and most of this post. Unjust is currently working on her second ABL:Radio mix and it should be ready sometime mid-November.
