Food and Drink: April 2007 Archives

In honor of the under-employed, Happy Administrative Professionals Day!
Instead of the awkward post-dinner drink with coworkers, most of whom make more money than you do, spend the evening with folks who really care. The Reverend Jen has organized a night of reverence, delight, drunken debauchery, and what's even better--free treats. Relax with free back rubs, makeovers, an open mic, raffle prizes and (she promises) more!
Reverend Jen's 11th Annual Professional Secretaries Day Extravaganza
9:30 p.m. at Mo Pitkin's, 34 Avenue A

PJ Hanley's got its barbecue out starting Sundays, and I just got an email that Flatbush Farm is holding not one but two barbecue celebrations this Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm. Not only will there be "savory meats" but also clams, veggies, corn bread and veggie chili. Flatbush Farm, of course, just happens to be right near the Botanic Gardens, which is holding its Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Fest this weekend. Two birds with one stone, I say.

Saturday's high according to Weather.com is 69 degrees, and from noon to 6 p.m., you can buy $1 dishes in Chinatown during Taste of Chinatown. Yum. Almost makes me forget I was going to be an organic gardening bunny this weekend. Decisions, decisions. Check out previous ABL Taste of Chinatown posts for 2005 and 2006.

Rumor has it that the Red Hook ballfields may be kicking off tomorrow. Unfortunately, rumor also has it that it's going to be bucketing rain. Those tacos are so tasty, however, that I'm doing my rain dance--which looks eerily like the Cabbage Patch. In other food news, Bubby's Brooklyn owner has responded to a fair amount of criticism about the slipping quality of his food by taking over his own kitchen. Anyone been recently? And though Cafe Chili--whose menu ominously lists both pad thai and linguine with clam sauce--seems to be near opening in the old Thai restaurant space on Court, there's not much word on the progress of Po and Jessie's Brooklyn Kitchen.

I will not bore you with my newfound love of the tart yogurty deliciousness that is Pinkberry, since it is not currently available in Brooklyn. If you are ever in Chelsea, the 30s, the Upper East Side, or L.A., however, you MUST try it. I'm not sure how they get the crack into their product, but it's there and it will make you happy. My quest for Pinkberry and the trip down the early 90s yogurt lane led me to another new yogurt phenom, Yolato (pictured above) that's currently open in the Village and Upper West Side. As the name suggests, it's a combination of yogurt and gelato, and, according to the website, a location is opening on Smith Street in the 3rd quarter. Nothing, of course, will beat the deliciousness that is Court Pastry's Italian ice, but I'm wondering how Yolato stacks up to Pinkberry. Oh, and if you cannot wait and refuse to go into Manhattan for Pinkberry or Yolato, check out this great site that tells you how to make a Pinkberry approximation yourself.
