Carroll Gardens: January 2008 Archives

At my other job, a colleague was calling around checking up on Valentine's Day menus for a feature we were putting together. Turns out a lot of Valentine's Day reservations are already solidly booked (Asiate is one example and not a cheap one, at that). In Brooklyn, at least, there's one opportunity to get the dinner delivered to you. It's from Naturally Delicious caterers, who did my wedding. The Menu for Love dinner for two is $150 plus tax and delivery ($25 in Brooklyn). It's five courses and includes such delicacies as baked oysters, lobster bisque, tenderloin, a cheese plate AND a Valhrona flourless chocolate cake. Seems like a good deal if you can manage to get the house clean but can't handle pulling together a do-it-yourself meal of romance.

See The Brooklyn Paper's story about a group of residents who are fighting a liquor license for an adjacent raw bar to Black Mountain Wine Bar (which I love and is sooo laid-back, not like it could ever be mistaken for a frat bar).

Come on, people, Hoyt as the new Smith? Really? Is there every anything that changes in this neighborhood that people actually like? That's right, I'm being grumpy at the grumps.

BGH.jpg

Late this last summer, after an event at The Yard, I stopped at Bar Great Harry (BGH) for the first time and tried Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. It was one of the most flavorful high gravity beers (9%) I've had the pleasure of tasting. BGH has since become my favorite neighborhood joint for enjoying microbrews.

One my most recent visit, I was excited to learn of their upcoming team-up with Stinky Brooklyn and Dogfish Brewery. On Thursday, January 22nd around 7pm, BGH will have a tasting event consisting of 6 brews and 6 well matched cheeses. The downside, this event is far from free. You will need to purchase a $50 ticket ahead of time (call 718-222-1103 between 2 and 5pm). Regardless of the price, I plan on being there.
