Changes Afoot at Caputo's

| | Comments (2)

So two big changes today at Caputo's on Court Street. The first is the new counter woman, who while trying desperately to be nice, didn't seem to be connecting with the hodgepodge of old neighborhood Italian-talking regulars and new neighborhood Italian-goods lovers. Second, she kept telling people to use "the number system" (though I missed it, there is apparently a board at the front of the store with numbers). Today, anyway, the combination of new person + number system was not going well. No one took one, and when someone finally did, everybody was pissed when said person appeared to skip the line. To an outsider, this might seem like a small thing, but at a never-changing institution like Caputo's it's a pretty big deal. Still, I'll endure new people and numbers if it means I can continue to enjoy easy access to the best lunch meats, fresh mozzarella, pasta, etc., in Brooklyn.

I was there too and skipped the number board by mistake. I think the counter lady is a relative. I don't think the numbers are necessary. It's the slowness of the line that can be a problem, but that's part of the experience.

I grew up down the block from P.J. Hanley's and my Pa's social club was only a few doors down

(it's now a resturaunt i think.

I went there for some food and a few drinks with my childhood friend who also lived on fourth place.

This article hit the nail on the head of how i felt when i walked through the door and heard a D.J. and only saw a two faces that i always remembered as i walked past hand in hand with my Grandfather, may G-D rest his soul because i don't think he would have liked the idea of me in P.J. Hanley's.
