New Camera, New Photos
So just invested in a Canon RebelXT ... I have much to learn, but naturally the cats were my first subjects. Also, cats are hard, they move a lot, have big eyes and reflect the flash!

You might be able to go flashless if they are at a window.
I finally bought a separate flash unit (about $250) that let's me bounce the flash off of walls, ceiling or a piece of white cardboard. So far, it has helped soften my indoor shots quite a bit.
