Tasteofchinatownoct062 I never get tired of Taste of Chinatown. Cheap Chinese food ($1-$2), right on the street, no hassle, lots of choices--divine! This year we went a little too close to closing--many merchants had packed up by just after 5pm, but we still managed to score great fried dumplings, the fabled lemon-ginger-tea, several "Chinese tamales" (zongzi), and to continue the Asia-Latin theme some pockets resembling empanadas. Also nibbled were fish balls, black sesame ice cream from the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, and fake meats in all shapes and sizes.

This was my first TOC, and I felt like we'd had at least one item from every table (oink). Some, I only ventured one or two bites of (those white steamed bean-filled dumplings were a bit too sweet for my tastes), but generally everything was dee-lish. And so cheap!

Favorites: ginger lemon tea, warm baked pork humbows, and some orgasmic fried chicken.

Least favorites: deep-fried doughy flat things that were dripping with oil, some brick-like cakes (I can't think of the name) that had a cool design on top. Too dense with ingredients that were too unidentifiable for me.

Had a nice walk back to Brooklyn over the Manhattan Bridge. Much more scenic, in my opinion, than its counterpart to the south.

i've been raving about the ginger-tea since my last TOC --a year ago! it was just as good as i remember. May May Bakery also has really yummy steamed sticky rice balls wrapped in leaf :)
