The Space That Is No Longer Sparky's
The bar that formerly was Sparky's at the corner of Court Street and Nelson Street is slowly revealing itself. Recently, the plywood covering was removed from the exterior to reveal a brand-spakin' new facade, replete with exterior columns (Ionic, Corinthian or Doric?) and big window-doors. A peek revealed that the floor had changed from wood to flagstone and the bar on the right remained largely the same. Previous rumors have indicated the space will morph into a sports bar, any updates?

Much to my liver's detriment, Sparky's used to be something like my second living-room, especially since 90% of the staff lived in my building. The place died a slow and not amazingly dignified death but I always kinda wondered what might crop up there next... Sports bar huh? Shiver...
For some reason, flagstone entry way does not say "Sports Bar" to me.
and neither either do corinthian-(esque) columns! Sports bar huh? That sure is dissapointing, to me at least.
hmm... well at least it looks a little better than the initial rumors that it might be turned into a dry cleaners : )
I think a sports bar would be fan-frigging-tastic. I'm tired of having to schlepp up to overcrowded 200 5th to catch a game. We've already got an abliene and a minibar, let's fill this niche.
Wasn't Hanley's supposed to be the 'hood sports bar?
Yeah, for real: Hanley's is freakin' HUGE...why not let that be the point place for sports on TV. Abilene and Mini Bar are great, but two tiny bars that encourage conversation over competition aren't enough to compare to two vast jock hangs.
All I know is that the rumor that the owners are from Staten Island must be true, because the outside is SI- ugly. blech I hope they hire a designer or something.
Please. They have like 3 TV's at Hanley's and they don't pick up the major cable sports packages--seems I always need to ask the bartender to change it to even regular sports. Hanley's is the outdoor space, minibar the makeout space, and abilene the connect 4 space. Bring on the real sports for real!
Confirmed as a sports bar.
No word on whether they'll have a full license - old timers might remember that Sparky's was beer and wine only.
One of the owners of Sparky's told me, once upon a time, that they were denied a full license because of their proximity to St. Mary's Elementary School. Wait and see, I suppose.
Has anyone else noticed that the sign outside the bar, which was only recently installed, has now been removed? Does this mean the bar's not happening or they've had second thoughts? Why's it taking so long I wonder, to get it open?
Where did Jerry the owner go. I used to work there in 1996 now live in south Texas
These guys have left their trash on the sidewalks for months. They should show some respect for the neighborhood that they want to do business in.
I thought I heard jerry was opening another bar in prospect heights?
