A Brooklyn Beat: Va Va Vroom Carwash
Two recent trips--one a camping expedition up to Montreal, the other a work trip to LA--reaffirmed my love/hate relationship with car culture. Living in New York, it's easy to forget about the simple but deep pleasure of flying down unknown roads, making waves with your hand out the car window or suddenly cherishing a crap Thompson Twins song simply because it's the best thing on a middle-of-nowhere radio station. On the other hand, there's no love lost for the car culture in LA , where people take a company-sponsored SuperShuttle five blocks from the office parking lot to the front door. I guess the bottom line for me is a I love to play dress-up with car culture, but I'm definitely glad it's not a part of my everyday life. In the spirit of this, burlesque troop the Va Va Voom Room is hosting a benefit car wash ($30) in front of Galapagos this Saturday from 1pm to 7pm. Drinks and BBQ will be consumed, aut0-themed tunes will be played, and one can only wonder how far folks will stretch the definition of "car." Proceeds go to the 52nd St. Project, a youth theater organization.

Cars, definitely a love/hate relationship. The only time I miss having a car in NY is when I want to do something completely random. Otherwise, I don't miss fender benders, tickets, gas bills, payments, trips to the service center and traffic.
i'm babysitting a friend's car this week. the anxiety of finding a parking spot nearly crippled me ... but i did successfully parallel park the world's largest 1984 Bronco--on the first try! (after a 1/2 hour of searching for that perfect spot)
Have you experienced the weirdness of moving the car across the street, penguina? I had to move a car for some friends in the neighborhood who let me use it, and I was so completely baffled by all the rituals surrounding the tue/thu switch. You can double park it, and disappear for an hour, but you have to leave a note, and if you miss your, like, 5 minute window, you're back to square 1. I did meet a lot of nice people though!
crazy. i always see the double-parkers, and have often wondered about the etiquette.
