Stinky Brooklyn
I know, everyone has already jumped on the Stinky Brooklyn bandwagon (including me), but I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of the dedication these people are bringing to the neighborhood culinary scene. When we stopped by a few weekends ago, they had a whole cured (smoked, I think?) pig leg on display, and they were giving free samples to all. We also picked up some pickled green tomatoes--very interesting! Stinky is at 261 Smith and run by the Smith and Vine wine people.

That wasn't just a leg of pig, it was Jamón Serrano
ewe.
I was very excited when Stinky opened because I am a foodie and a total cheese lover. I must say I am dissapointed that Stinky is falling into the same bad habits as other stores that sell cheese ( Sahadi's, Pacific Food on Court). The other day I bought a fresh mozzarella ball to make a sandwich and was looking forward to it since I had also bought a beautiful ciabatta. Unfortunately the cheese tasted like a refrigerator, it had that aftertaste that you get from food that has been sitting in the refrigerator for a long time. I will not be getting the mozzarella there again and their other cheeses are at least three dollars more than at Fairway. I do hope they start treating the cheese with more respect. By the way I once read that cheese should never be wrapped in cling wrap because it needs to breathe. In France in cheese shops the cheese is only wrapped in wax paper.
"I do hope they start treating the cheese with more respect."
That's why I love reading this site!
May the cheeses of the world unite and put down this opression!
Ryan - if you are want fresh mozarella, why are you going anywhere other than Caputo's on Court Street? Theirs has to be the most respected (and respectable) ball of cheese in all of Brooklyn.
Everytime I have had mozzarella from Stinky it has been outstanding. Super fresh, super creamy and stays that way for a long time. Also, I have yet to find any other cheese shop where the prices were lower than theirs. Last time I checked Fairway wrapped their cheese in cling wrap...as well as every other cheese shop in the New York area
