Everything's Green on Smith: Sapodilla, Stinky Brooklyn, Provence en Boite, Porchetta, Bird
New businesses are popping up on Smith Street like weeds in our backyard garden after the rain. One that's yet to flower is Sapodilla, in the old Village 247 space. All the information we have is taped up to the window (above), but good to hear that the garden will still be accessible.
Of course, the new cheese store Stinky Brooklyn, right next to the yet-to-open Provence en Boite, has been making a splash. My first foray revealed much more than cheese in the tiny space. Bread from Mazzola, sweets from One Girl Cookies, duck fat from Applewood and a nice case of chorizo and cured meats, plus pickled green tomatoes in the cold case. YUM!
Not to be left out is the newly opened French bistro Porchetta at Smith and Douglass, where the old Banania used to be. If you have a chance, grab a business card, which features a pig in a colorful wig and a high-necked shirt. A peek at the brunch menu revealed hangover offerings that are par for the neighborhood (several kinds of eggs, pancakes, etc). I do like what they've done with the front planters (click to enlarge at left).
And to show that I'm not totally partial to food, I stopped in Bird at Smith and Butler. Wasn't super-hot on the jeans selection, but the store was stocking some great summer dresses and tops. If you don't have a high-paying Manhattan job, however, these may be out of your price range (most items I liked were $150 and up).

Village 247 was the worst Restaurant to come along on Smith St for a long time and I'm A) surprised it lasted as long as it did and B) glad it's finally gone.
We ate there ONCE... My turkey burger was still raw on the inside and my wife's Pesto Pasta was made with sandy Basil...
Nasty.
Funny about the turkeyburger. Went once to Village 247- companion ordered turkeyburger welldone (which he thought was standard for ground poultry). Comes
rare - sends back - still comes back undercooked.
And then we were told thats how it should be cooked.
Well, excuse me.
Funny thing is... I was warned by friends not to go there... but I was hungry for a turkey burger and couldn't think of anywhere else to go on Smith at the time (2 years ago?) so we thought "it's been 6 months, they're still open, maybe they got better"...
Good riddance.
What I want to know is, what's up with the new bistro's lace curtains? It looks like they should be selling creepy dolls or something...
I tried Provence en Boite last night, and I can't recommend it. Two of my lamb chops were gamy, and the other two were tasteless, while the sauce was just sweet and did nothing to enhance the lamb. My friend ordered the duck, which was passable, but mostly flavorless. Plus the music was cheesy (Gypsy Kings, etc.) -- what is up with local French places and bad music? (I'm talking to you, Tabac and Robin du Bois) -- and the decor was in the touristy kitsch vein. Can anyone recommend a decent French restaurant in the area?
Hey man! We really appreciate that you mention us in your page and we want to invite you to come any time and try are food and drinks, also I just want to clear that we are not French, nothing wrong with the frenchies, but we are a Modern Italian restaurant that is trying to brake the pattern. Ask for Marco or myself Rody, we will help you with anything.
See you around.
