ABL:Radio - Boogie Down Brooklyn - Mixed by DJ Duckcomb

| | Comments (8)

Duckcomb You know how it goes. You wake up underneath your Georgia O'Keeffe Brooklyn Bridge poster and stumble into the kitchen to pour some Gorilla brand coffee into your Brooklyn parrots coffee mug. A quick shower and you're on the way out the door, but not before grabbing your Brooklyn sweatshirt in case it's chilly. Still, the day is missing something, and you can't figure out what. And THEN it hits you, what you need is an iTunes mix entirely devoted to the great place that is Brooklyn, because you can never have enough Brooklyn.

Thank God for ABrooklynLife. Because today we bring you a mix by Brooklyn's own DJ Duckcomb (aka Patrick Billard, aka crazypoprock) that shows proper love to the borough. Billard, originally from Gainsville, Fla., has had five years to get to know the area. You can catch him live at Manhattan's Skinny on the first Friday of every month, and on May 6 at Columbia Street's Lido Bar for the Brooklyn Collective Party. You can also email him here.

In the words of Billard, " 'Boogie Down Brooklyn' represents a few years worth of hardcore record collecting and digging around the great borough of Brooklyn. I feel it represents the musical and cultural diversity of Brooklyn. Everything from ESG-sampling 80s hip-hop to a deep acid house to weird avant 80s funk by downtown NYC 80s legends like Arthur Russell and Peter Gordon to disco performed by Carribean transplants to plenty of funny disco and boogie sounds. All records are either about Brooklyn or are on tiny Brooklyn indie labels, and most were dug up in Brooklyn ... and yes the final track is a cover of the Who on "Slope Records" out of Park Slope, 1975!"

Fantastic mix! I wonder, what is the Vivian Vee --> Brooklyn connection?

Sounds like a good one...how great a name is Arts & Crafts? Can't wait to listen over the weekend.

does it say Vivien Vee? I think it should be Vivian Lee...Vivian Vee is an Italo disco singer. Vivian Lee is on this label called Jefferseif which has a brooklyn address and 718 area code...the only other release i've seen on the label is a cover version of Madonna "Holiday".

Arts & Crafts is on the Jus Born label famous for the Strafe "Set it Off" and the Harlequin 4's version that was up on abrooklynlife last week! it was Walter Gibbons' label. the Arts & Crafts i found in a Park Slope record store basement two years back...it goes for over $100 on ebay!

Oops - maybe it did say Lee and my eyes just read Vee!

I have the Madonna-covering Jefferseif record you speak of, never realized it was a Brooklyn product. :)

nice one! that's pretty rare too...although it doesn't really improve on the original does it? i can't remember. i used the "dub mix" of the Vivian Lee...there's a more vocal mix on the a-side. that one shouldn't be too hard to find. it's actually a fairly known track among house afficianados...it's from 1986 and is rather ahead of it's time i think.

Vivian Lee is on this label called Jefferseif which has a brooklyn address and 718 area code

She also did a hell of a job in "Gone with the Wind."

Superb mix. Like a well-balanced mojito - a little tart, a little minty, a little sweet, and a nice buzz that sustaiiiiiiiiiins.

ABL radio is the shit.

Just to clarify things for you guys. I'm actually the profucer and the writer of "Music is so wonderful" by Vivien Lee.

My name is Ed "the Red" Goltsman

First, Vivien is not any kind of Italo-disco singer. She is originally from Alabama, a real gospel singer, as good as they come! We met in Brooklyn I think in 1985 you can see the pic here: http://www.u-turnrecords.com/photoalbum2.htm and that's when we originally recorded the song - in Brooklyn in the basement of my house in Sea Gate, Coney Island. Then I did the remixes and re-released it in 1992 on my label Bottom Line Records. The accapella intro was sampled by many other producers and this song was released by many European labels some legally, some not. I'm still going after some right now for copyright infringement. Regretfully Vivien died in a car crash right after she retired from working at NY telephone company and returned back to Alabama. I think she was one of the best. I still love her and remember her. This record is a monument to her and her awseme talent.

Peace and love,

Ed The Red Goltsman

Vivian Vee...I don't mean "Lee" was a phenominal italian disco artist...she was way ahead of her time, the trancey sound back in the late 70's.

Tittles like "Remember","Give Me A Break",./..an experience to listen to.
