Dine in Brooklyn: The Update

So Brooklyn is weird about its restaurant week. I called a few weeks ago and they refused to give me any information, saying they couldn't release it until the press conference. I mentioned that it might be helpful to have the info before the actual event, and they were not moved. It's finally been released, and the list of restaurants is on the Brooklyn Tourism's website. Here's the deal: For most of the restaurants it's three courses for $20.06, with "no attitude on the side." A few restaurants have a two people for $20.06 deal. The specials run from April 3 to April 11.  I wouldn't bank on the lack of attitude, but, hey, the price is right.

My recommendations for 3 courses for $20.06
Applewood (D), prepare your arteries, rich, indulgent fare
Bar Minnow (D), cute name, great fish shack
Blue Ribbon/Sushi (D), ashamed that I haven't been
Bouillabaisse 126 (D), nice French on the "waterfront"
Bubby's (D), especially if you have kids
Chestnut (D), elevated home cooking
Crave (D), normally overpriced, but always tasty
Fornino (L, D), inventive pizza in hipsterville
ici (L, D), no personal experience, but I hear good things
Maria's Mexican Bistro (D), a must-go anytime
Patois (D), love to hear those Frenchies
Waterfront Ale House (L, D), if only for the history

My recommendations in the two for $20.06 category
Atlantic Chipshop (L, D), get your fried English food on
Schnack (L, D), you already know how I feel*
Zipi Zape (D), yum, yum, yum, tapas, yum

*Schnack was kind enough to email me its menu:
-basket of 1/2 fries, 1/2 onion rings
-deep-fried biscuit single w/lettuce, tomato, bacon
-choice of ribs or 1/2 chicken
-scoop of RC gelato from Il Laboratorio del Gelato
-two glasses of fountain soda, or Swag beer if available

Well, Dine In Brooklyn has been pretty good to me and the lil miss. On Tuesday we went to Taku, on Smith St., and Thursday night to Crave, on Henry. Of the two, I would say that Crave was by far the better meal. Thats not... Read More

We've made our Applewood, Taku, and Queen reservations. We'll probably skip the Queen though, as Restaurant Week menu is only served 'til 6p, and they have a 4course $24 special menu everyday 'til 6p. We can then replace it with Blue Ribbon Sushi (who doesn't take reservations).

Just called zipi zape ... they are not participating in the 2 for $20 as stated on the Web site, fyi. also, no reservations for parties under 6

I tried Tempo and Chestnut last year. The thing with Chestnut is that the regular Tues and Wed. $25 prix fixe is such a good deal (I think they're still doing it) and the choices are more exciting, so you inevitably fork over the extra five bucks (or $4.94, whatever). Assuming you do Dine in Brooklyn on a Tues. or Wed., which we inadvertently did.

I have reservations as Applewood, Crave and Chestnut. I wonder how much weight I'll gain when the week is over.

Taku, Taku and more Taku. That's all I have to say about that.

Did Sette last PM. No sense of being discriminated against because of asking for RW menu. Meal decent, but not spectacular (choice of salad or soup, pasta or skate, apple tart).

Sette was clearly overwhelmed by crowd...servers seemed anxious and wait between courses and for check was extensive.

BTW, I posted my experience at Sette on chowhound, as I have done for other restaurants during RW in years gone by, and my post was removed. Chowhound's editor emailed me, statint that , although my post was not suspicious, they have a policy of removing all posts about Sette because of prior suspicious posts. This policy has been controversial in the past and I protested.

im going to applewood with the family on thursday and dont know what to expect. i usually hate these restaurant week things because ive always found them to be serving mediocre versions of their normal menu but applewood is my favorite brooklyn restaurant...im hoping i actually get something decent.

the tempo menu looks awesome though.

Stone Park Cafe is also doing it for the first time and I'm very excited that Brooklyn's best restaurant is finally involved.
