A Brooklyn Beat: Wide Right, Nina Simone, Dirtbombs

| | Comments (3)

Simone If Robert Christgau, nutty old music chief of the Voice, is to believed, Wide Right at Magnetic Field is the show to make this weekend. Like many a Christgau pick, this rockin’ bar-type band seems to hyped loudest by him. But, ya know what else? He’s rarely completely off his rocker, so it’s got to be worth the peanuts they charge at the door. Plus, after that, you can pop into the former Soju space, now called Dragon’s Den, and verify that that rainbow sticker in the window actually signifies an honest-to-goodness gay bar. It’s about time. Early Saturday evening at BAM Rose Cinema is Nina Simone: Love Sorceress, a rarely screened concert film from the ‘70s. A band with a whole lot of hype, The Dirtbombs, play Saturday at Southpaw, and though they may have been overrated as part of the garage-band mania of the last few years, they make a cute little racket, even if it’s not quite dirty or bomby enough.

it's funny you write that, because about 8 years ago, when I lived on Atlantic Avenue, there was a gay bar in the spot where Magnetic Field lives today.

Has anyone noticed that the NY Bd. of Education. Has taken away, the only holiday that is uniquely Brooklyn. Brooklyn day is no longer a day off school. As a product of the "bored" of Ed. I object. Brooklyn day is our history! BOOOOOOO not fair
