Three Apple iPods...

| | Comments (9)

Dead_ipod_3 An important holiday message to those generous souls who plan on giving some kind of Apple music listening device this year: BUY THE EXTENDED APPLE CARE PROTECTION PLAN. I am now on iPod number three thanks to the foresight of my dear husband. The extended warranty is well worth it.

Right... let's not forget to mention how you like to twirl the iPod around your head by the headphone cables.

if anything my ipods die from neglect--not the kind where you twirl it around your head--but where you forget to bring it with you. perhaps i didn't feed it enough? perhaps i haven't stroked it lovingly for the required amount of time? clearly i would kill a Tamagotchi virtual pet in a heartbeat. and who knew there were so many ...

The death of an i-pod is sad. But those faces you've drawn are damn cute.

So what does "Crafty" do when she gets the new iPod? She takes it out to show me, AND DROPS IT ON THE FLOOR!

Egad. Three ipods?

I took my sick ipod and my letter from the class action suit against Apple to the Apple Store in SoHo yesterday. According to the terms of the settlement, they owe me a battery exchange. The damned thing won't hold a charge for over 30 minutes now, and it never lasted more than three hours to begin with.

My Macolyte friends assured me that they'd probably just give me a new one on the spot. After all, Apple takes great care to develop a loyal customer base.

That was then, this is now. They might bend over backwards for their computer users, but if they pissed off every prior ipod owner in existence in wouldn't put a dent in their profits. I heard they were selling more this holiday season than they sold in the last three years.

I must say I was impressed by their breathtaking lack of customer service. I waited in line at the counter for 20 minutes. When I made it to the front, I was told to log onto a website and make an appointment for service at the store or log onto a different website and get instructions for mailing in my ipod for a replacement.

They have a great interface and a stylish little device. I loved it when I could make it through two workouts on one charge. Now, however, I'm almost ready to throw the damned thing in the trash.

Then again, I look really uncool at the gym with my minidisc player. That's so 20th century.

Sigh.

heh, you made the mistake of coming without an appointment, did you? tsk, tsk, tsk. thankfully, the soho store has upgraded its appointment system. it used to be that you could only sign up for the next available spot (which would somehow vault from 9am to 6pm in the time it took me to get to work in the morning). now, at least, you can sign up for an incremental time slot.

the truth is they will take you if you look like you are about to cry, get hysterical, or if you have carried in an entire computer without making an appointment. i have seen this happen both times i've gone to get mine replaced. generally, it seems they take more pity on the befuddled looking who tote a humungous computer than the very aware, but angry, ipod owners.

sigh. they do look cool. and i still kind of want a nano. what the hell is wrong with me?

I'll take that iPod before you toss it in the trash! There are aftermarket batteries out there that are better than Apple originals. Replacing one isn't easy, but it's not impossible either.

My wife was able to pull that schtick with Air Canada during the 03 blackout when we were stranded during what was supposed to be our honeymoon. She used to be an actress, so producing tears on cue wasn't difficult.

When I try the same thing it just pisses them off.

Trashing it was hyperbole of course. I'll end up mailing it in and using the old MD and my XM unit in the meantime.

Thanks for the tip on the 3rd party batteries. I'll look into that. I would love to get even 80% of the battery life that my unit, a third generation 40GB, was supposed to get.

In the meantime, I'll join ABL in wondering why, as I was leaving the snooty countersaurus at the SoHo store, I actually contemplated getting in the 45 minute line to buy a nano.

Why? WHY????

So far my iPod has done me good, but it has only been since the new 60GB Video iPods have been out. Thankfully the batteries were good to go through my 3 hour treks (each way) to work and back.
