Red Hook Barbecue
Having spent five years in Atlanta, I appreciate a good Southern barbecue, and my ears always perk up when I hear there's a new place in town. Pioneer Bar-B-Q in Red Hook (formerly Pioneer Bar, really the same bar but with barbecue) has entered the barbecue pack, and since there's no good barbecue in our corner of Brooklyn, I give two thumbs up. There was only one kind of barbecue on the menu at our visit--a tasty beef brisket--and truth be told it's a little dry until you layer on some spicy sauce, still not bad at all for a $6 sandwich. The real gem at Pioneer is the mac and cheese ($9), served in a bubbling cauldron with a layer of browned cheesy crust. Mixed throughout the calorie intensive feast is a chipotle sauce, which lights a friendly fire. Throw in a pint of Sixpoint Ale for maximum enjoyment.

This Mac and Cheese has a dash of hot chipotle sauce making it extra tasty.
Mmmm. Sounds good. I'll see you two there!
But $9 for mac n cheese -- in Red Hook, no less?
Well.. it's definitely not Kraft.. In Red Hook? Yeah, I hear ya.
D. and I (who have rather hearty appetites) split the sandwich and the mac&cheese and were more than full. The mac&cheese comes in a rather large and deep casserole dish--even though it's listed as a side dish, it's a meal in itself.
Hallelujah! BBQ in the nabe. Guess I know what I am doing Saturday night- geting fitted for a feedbag.
Hehe.. yeah, it beats the crap out of Jake's
Amen Dennis, my distaste for Jakes is what led me into the arms of our fair web-hostess. And she has delivered the goods- another option.
By the way, what's the status of the Ikea, or Fairway, or whatever in Red Hook? I no longer live on the East Coast and must live vicariously through this site (even though Dennis seems like a "Hipster").
Where do you live now?
The first time I met Dennis he was wearing his cell phone on his belt. I have done my best to groom him in the general direction of hipsterdom (or at least away from geekdom).
In a land far, far away, where the official State folk dance is the Square Dance, the official bird is a bunting lark and the State fish is none other than the Greenback Cutthroat Trout.
Sounds like Colorado!
I always figured if I had to leave the 'hood I wasn't leaving for LI, NJ or any of the tri-state suburbs, but for somewhere completely different.
How different? This time last year, I was a South Brooklyn stoop sitter. Now, I own a Yak.
Now, what about Red Hook?
A lot is going on the Red Hook. The Ikea is moving forward as far as I know and the Fairway seems to be nearing completion. But at the two past BWAC shows I've asked a security guard at the site when it was going to open and got the same answer both times: In a few months. That was over 2 years ago, so it's hard to say when it will actually open. The condos on Imlay St. are held up in court again but the cruise ship terminal is going ahead.
I love Pioneer! Their chicken is amazing too!
Seconded on the chicken. The smoked chicken sandwich is next-level delicious. Not sure if it's a special or not. Can't go wrong with the chili fries, either, but only for the hearty of stomach...
I love Pioneer!!! The food is really good, and I love taking out-of-town visitors there- because they get to see a really cool part of Brooklyn and Pioneer is so friendly and there's a good mix of locals and Red Hook explorers. My fav is the veggie sloppy joe- the fries are bad-ass too.
my friends own that bar and run the kitchen, so i'm really glad to hear that you all like it so much. i'll be sure to pass the kind words along to jimmy and andrew.
