Dunkin' Donuts Comes to Carroll Gardens?
Hot on the heels of P.J. Hanley's closing, ABrooklynLife gets word through a faithful reader that the much-loved pizza place Leonardo's at 383 Court Street is soon to be a Dunkin' Donuts. Say it ain't so!

I just hope I won't smell that coffee on the way to the Carroll Street station. It'll will make me want to vomit.
Brooklyn Bread is way better than Dunkins ever will.
And you can take that to the bank. (the North Star OR the Shittybank!)
I heard from the owners of Fragole that Leonardo's was closing. and that they were putting a Dunkin Donuts in. I was so sad that I couldn't get my last pie in time for Football season.
The smell of Dunkin Donuts coffee makes me ill. I hope I won't be smelling it on the way to the Carroll Street Station.
You must be freakin kidding me! That is so sucky I cannot even believe it. Why would a DD even want the space- it has a freakin patio! What good is that to a DD? I was hoping for a restuarant or beer garden type place, oh well.
Anyone with any sense goes to Giardinis anyhow. Carroll Gardens hasn't been the same since Christardi's closed 7 years ago.
Christardi's. I blanking on that place, remind me Miss Lo.
Giardinis: I ordered from them (dispite living steps from Sals). Once, when I opened the box there was a big metal bolt right in the middle of my pie. I called them and told them about it and the guy on the phone yells out to someone "I found da bolt." Apparently it fell loose from the oven while my pie was cooking.
I think Christardi's was the small place off Clinton on President...regardless of the name of that place they had great pizza and served roasted whole garlic instead of bread. They weren't around very long.
Dunkin Donuts seemed to have forced the closing of Dee Dee donuts on 5th Ave & 9th Street.
Does anyone know why L's closed? Did the rent go up? Moving to Florida? Why, dammit, why? G's is good, alot better than Nino's (for pizza at least), but I will still miss my Leonardo's.
I posted this on the hanley's post:
Leonardo's was the best brick oven pizza I'd ever had. I was actually there on the last night, we were joking with the owners (owner's wife and son, I think) they asked how it was and my friend complained it was terrible and I said "I'm never coming back!" They had a good laugh at that. We got the sense that the owner, who I think still lives upstairs, was glad to give it up after so much time and probably making better money selling out to Dunkin Doughnuts. Perhaps if it HAD been found out by the tourist and hipster crowds who filled the inferior Grimaldis every day, Leonardo's would still be open
>>Leonardo's was the best brick oven pizza I'd ever had.
Very true. I was a faithful customer of L's since it first opened around 1988, kept going back after I got married, after I had my first child, and second child, and took friends there often even when I moved and had to drive over. And I preferred the pizza to famous spots like Patsy's. L's was not just consistently good pizza at every level, but the people who ran it were the best -- real solid Brooklynites who were always either incredibly friendly or lovably cranky. I really miss the place and it's a shame it's gone. I'm just sorry I never had the chance to say so long to the folks who ran it.
I agree that Grimaldis is a little overrated. I've only had an opportunity to try Leonardo's once. I had a very basic pie, but it was definitely tasty. Totonno's is better than Grimaldis in my opinion. I've also heard Spumoni Gardens is another good spot.
Actually, Christardis was around a long time. They were well established when I moved to Brooklyn in '92, and closed in '98.
The DD franchise is being opened by relatives of the Leonardo's owners. We found that out when we ate there on the last day and made the usual "there goes the neighborhood" noises. Oops.
Actually, I think SAM'S on Court Street makes the best pizza in the nabe. If THEY ever close, I'm going to cry for years.
That's such sad news. I'm not a fan of Sam's, the sauce is too sweet; guess I'll have to try Giardini's. The House of Pizza is OK, but not great.
But what I loved most about Leonardo's was the patio, and the neighborhood feel. It was one of my first favorite places when I moved to NY after college in 1990. Sadly, now that I'm older and fatter, I don't eat pizza that often, so I missed the chance to have my last L's pie.
The House of Pizza closes early and it tends to be greasy. They've missed a lot of my business because of their early hours.
with a Munchkin in one hand and a Boston Creme in the other, Leonardo's patio Jesus blesses us, "In the name of the father, the son, and the holy Mochachino....."
Now if we could only turn this damn backwards walking Bed Bug into a Pizza Hut, we'd be all set.
