Spiffing Up Union and Henry

Royals_5Aroma_1The scent of Mazzola Bakery's just-cooling loaves is one of the reasons I love a late-night walk down Henry Street. I find Henry's quiet Carroll Gardens blocks some of the most old-school in the neighborhood--old and young men hanging outside of social clubs, teenagers chilling outside of the ice cream and gelato store, entire families conversing on stoops. It's nice to see a street retain its character while undergoing the nip and tuck of progress. First Nino's renovates its pizzaria.  Then the long-empty space next door transforms into a new restaurant, Royal's Downtown. And it looks like the windowed building catty-corner from the pizza place will open soon as Aroma Bagels.

Mazzola Bakery has, without doubt, the best breads and pastries this side of the known universe.

The fresh smell of baked goods envelopes you upon walking into the store... and their coffee's noteworthy too!

I love when you're walking late at night and you can smell that they're making cinnamon rolls! Such a wonderful tease.

Aroma looks minutes away from opening, although they've now been working on that space for more than a year. But I still miss Amici's.

I've entertained the thought of snagging a freah baked loaf of bread when walking home from a bar at 2am.. It's very tempting and they leave the carts right by their open door.

I have to admit, the aroma's truly heavenly. I used to love walking by Mazzola's bakery at any time of the day or night. And, whenever the store was opened for business, I couldn't resist stopping in to BUY something, be it the lard bread (which sounds disgusting, but is quite delicious), chocolate bread, or a fresh loaf of Italian bread. After reading the previous comment, I just hope that everyone doesn't have the urge to "steal" a loaf of bread at night. (Especially now that it has been posted about the door being left open!!!)
