Dennett Place: One of My Favorite Carroll Gardens Streets

Tucked between Court and Smith streets on its west and east and Luquer and Nelson streets on its north and south, this mini street has mini houses with mini doors! Lately I've taken to imagining Brooklynified hobbits living in these mini lairs (quite possibly because I'm re-reading The Hobbit).

There is something definitely very surreal about this street. Reminds me of a street in Atlanta where you're in the middle of a city neighborhood.. then there's this dirt road leading off somewhere. I decided to follow it and saw a barn and a broken down model A Ford.. it felt like I was off in the country somewhere. Dennett Place in our 'hood makes me think I'm walking through some sort of Walt Disney exhibit about Brooklyn.

I wonder if they have little hobbit like ironic t-shirts to wear. It's a strange area near the subway. I always go that way on my way to pick up food from Mezcal's.

Ahh, my very good friend lives on this block in a top floor apt that her family has owned for ages...actually her dad did live in the hobbit like laire when he was younger.

And everyone on that block is so awesome. They are always having block parties and cooking the most amazing food and have no qualms with inviting strangers to sit and eat with them.

Now for the real serious question, is it luh-QUEER, or LOO-kur?

Dennis said:

Skunk.. it depends on who you ask or who you're talking to.

I wish I couls get in touch with some of my old friends there. Let's see Pauly Battglia, Gary Quam, The Perry boys, Billy Hunter, all the Orefice's

Tom said:

Its pronounced luh-queer - no emphasis on either syllable.

Dennett place is also known as Cats Alley.

I'm sure the people that live there would love to be thought of as hobbits or members of a Disney exhibit.

Pete's correct; loo-kur? is that what your real estate agent from california called it?
