Field of Glass

Shardsofglass

I've walked by this one empty lot off of Columbia Street in Carroll Gardens West many times, but it wasn't until last weekend that I noticed the field was covered in tiny bits of broken glass. At sunset, these shards reflect the light and give Brooklyn a rather poetic glow.

Actually this space is more north. The Ikea site is south, in an even more desolate area (although it's very cute, and I don't know that I'd want an Ikea in my 'hood).

When I worked at Tortillias (a burrito shack) back in Atlanta, we had this thing called a bottle beaver. You'd drop in bottles and they'd pulverize instantly. The byproduct of the process was buckets of glass gravel similar in size and shape to what you see in this picture. Wonder who's been dumping glass that should've been headed off to the recycler?

I don't think having an Ikea would be a terrible Idea. I fully support local business, but having a Target in the area has been a boon to Brooklyn. I do hate when big-box retail takes over the entire landscape, but having a few stores is better than having none at all.

Now I can grab 10 weeks worth of toilet paper at Target and carry it on my head like an African tribes woman as I walk home from the LIRR.
